Grapefruit and cholesterol8/3/2023 Rhabdomyolysis.Grapefruit has long had a reputation as a health food. Statin therapy: Review of safety and potential side effects. Quantifying effect of statins on low density lipoprotein cholesterol, ischaemic heart disease, and stroke: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Statin-associated rhabdomyolysis triggered by grapefruit consumption. Does grapefruit affect my medicine? (2018).Grapefruit–medication interactions: Forbidden fruit or avoidable consequences? You can learn more about how we ensure our content is accurate and current by reading our editorial policy. We link primary sources - including studies, scientific references, and statistics - within each article and also list them in the resources section at the bottom of our articles. Medical News Today has strict sourcing guidelines and draws only from peer-reviewed studies, academic research institutions, and medical journals and associations. Nevertheless, it may be better and simpler to avoid consuming grapefruit products when taking statins. For some statins, this may be a lower interaction than if a person took them simultaneously. However, taking a statin medication at a different time to consuming grapefruit may still cause an interaction. One analysis found that taking grapefruit juice with certain statins may actually have beneficial effects, reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein, or “bad,” cholesterol by up to approximately 6 percentage points.īecause of this likelihood, some scientists argue that healthcare providers should not prohibit people from taking grapefruit in moderation with certain statins.Ī person taking some statins may only start to see harmful effects if they drink 1 quart (946 milliliters) or more of grapefruit juice.Įating grapefruit is less risky because the typical serving size - about half a grapefruit - contains less than a typical glass of juice a person might have with breakfast. With this in mind, drinking a single, occasional glass of grapefruit juice while taking some statins is unlikely to cause harm, according to Harvard Health Publishing. It is not advisable to consume any grapefruit or grapefruit juice with the statin simvastatin. Whether it is safe to consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking statins depends on the statin and the person’s specific condition.īefore consuming any grapefruit products, people taking statins should discuss with a healthcare provider whether it is safe for them. In rare cases, this condition can lead to death. However, if healthcare providers can treat rhabdomyolysis, it is possible for them to prevent or reverse complications in the body. She experienced rhabdomyolysis after eating grapefruit daily for 10 days. One case report involved a 40-year-old female who was taking the statin simvastatin. In addition, some people who are experiencing an interaction between grapefruit and statins may experience mild muscle damage that may appear as myalgia. However, people with this condition may not experience all three. There are three main symptoms a person with rhabdomyolysis may experience: This can cause muscle cells to leak their contents into the bloodstream, leading to elevated levels of protein in the blood. It can occur when statin levels become too high in the blood.Ĭharacteristics of rhabdomyolysis involve damage to the body’s skeletal muscle tissue. This condition affects less than 0.1% of people taking statins. However, some varieties of citrus do not contain these interacting compounds, including navel oranges.Ī person taking statins can ask a healthcare provider what citrus fruits to avoid.Ĭonsuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice when taking statins comes with a rare but serious risk of rhabdomyolysis. In addition, other citrus fruits may contain compounds with similar interactions. Therefore, the body absorbs more statins than normal from the gut into the bloodstream.Īccording to one review by the research team that discovered the grapefruit-statin interaction, more than 85 drugs may interact with these compounds in grapefruit - not just statins. However, furanocoumarins, compounds that occur naturally in grapefruit, deactivate this enzyme, preventing it from breaking down statins. This process normally lowers the amount of statins reaching the bloodstream. Normally, when a person consumes statins without grapefruit juice, the enzyme CYP3A breaks them down within the intestines and liver. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with some statins, leading to potentially dangerous results.Įssentially, compounds in grapefruit prevent the body from metabolizing statins normally, which increases their concentration in a person’s blood. Selene died in a fire when she was three, but there are many theories speculating that she is hiding on Earth as they never found a body. Kai discusses Princess Selene, Queen Levana's niece and the only heir to the Lunar Crown with his adviser Konn Torin after she leaves. Sybil is the head thaumaturge of Queen Levana, ruler of the moon, but is currenlty on Earth to discuss an alliance between Luna and the Commonwealth. Kai, discouraged by his father's condition, walks down to Dr. Cinder was later taken to the Eastern Commonwealth by Linh Garan, her new guardian, who died a few days after adopting her from the plague. She was also given a control panel, a metal hand and leg to replace the limbs lost and that she does not remember anything prior to surgery. Cinder tells him the truth, that she was in a hover crash that killed her parents when she was eleven. Erland tells her that she is immune to the plague and questions her about her childhood. Cinder tries to attack him with a wrench hidden in her metal calf, but the doctor makes her feel tired and safe as she is persuaded not to. After several minutes, Cinder's immune system kicks in and the pathogens disappear.Īfter drawing another blood sample, the doctor moves her to another lab and talks to her in person, instead of over an intercom. The doctor injects her with tagged Letumosis pathogens and waits for them to take effect so he can give her an antidote. Erland, a researcher in the palace, draws Cinder's blood and when she awakens, opens up her control panel and scans her, revealing that she is 36.28% not human. Cinder puts up a fight with the med-droids, managing to take out two, but is tasered by a third droid and is taken away unconscious.ĭr. She has Cinder taken to the palace against her will for Letumosis research. When Cinder returns home, Adri is in grief and infuriated, blaming Cinder for her daughter's imminent health condition, thinking that even though Cinder doesn't have the plague, she must have passed it from Sacha to Peony. Peony then contracts the plague and is taken away. While in the junkyard looking for a new mag belt for Adri's hover, Cinder, Iko and Peony discover an old car, which Cinder plans to take home and repair. Prince Kai's father, Emperor Rikan, is currently sick with Letumosis, otherwise known as Blue Fever, a plague currently terrorizing Earth with no known survivors. After Kai leaves, the market is evacuated as a baker by the name of Chang Sacha has been infected with the plague Letumosis. While working, she meets Prince Kai of the Eastern Commonwealth who asks her to fix his android, Nainsi. Cinder owns a booth in the market place where she works as a mechanic with the family's android, Iko. Linh Cinder is a cyborg living in New Beijing, 126 years after World War IV, with her stepmother, Linh Adri, and her two stepsisters, Pearl & Peony. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, developing a forbidden attraction. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s letumosis. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. From space, ruthless Lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. There was a good blend of action and mystery which was addictive I always wanted to know what happened next.Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. I did guess the ‘big reveal’ right from the start but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. The story was interesting and had plenty of twists and turns to keep me entertained. I’m not usually a fan of forbidden romance but I didn’t find myself wanting to hurl into a bucket, so that was a good sign. Their relationship was slow-building and not in any way over-the-top like so many YA books. He too was a well-rounded character that actually acted like a normal person and not this perfect, romantic ideal that we so often picture when we see the word “prince”. I also really enjoyed the relationship between her and Kai, the Prince. I really wanted things to go her way as you find out further on, poor Cinder really didn’t have the best start in life. She was a funny, smart, determined protagonist and not once did I get fed up of her or roll my eyes like I did with the original character.

3 worst supreme court decisions8/2/2023 And the Court’s Republican majority dismantled two decisions protecting criminal defendants who were convicted or sentenced without adequate defense counsel, most likely condemning an innocent man to die in the process. It all but neutralized another half-century-old precedent permitting federal law enforcement officers who violate the Constitution to be sued. It also overruled a seminal 1971 decision prohibiting the government from advancing one religious belief at the expense of others. Wade, permitting states to ban abortions without having to resort to SB 8-style chicanery. In its just-completed term, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Jackson, moreover, was only the beginning of a Rumspringa of conservative excess led by the Court’s Republican-appointed majority. But to spite abortion, the conservative majority was willing to open the door to them. Realistically, the Court is unlikely to allow these sorts of attacks. Perhaps a state wants to make it illegal to own a gun, or maybe it wants to allow bounty hunters to sue any Black family that sends its child to a predominantly white school - and the federal judiciary will simply stand back and let it happen. If you apply the logic from Jackson more broadly, any state could pass a law unleashing such litigious bounty hunters upon people who exercise any constitutional right. The Court allowed that law to take effect, even though abortion was still considered a constitutional right at the time. Jackson involved Texas’s anti-abortion law SB 8, which allowed “any person” who is not employed by the state to sue anyone they suspect of performing an abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy, and to collect a bounty of at least $10,000 from that abortion provider. Last December, for example, the Supreme Court handed down a decision that fundamentally alters the Union - giving states sweeping authority to restrict their residents’ constitutional rights.Īt least, that’s what happened if you take the Court’s 5-4 decision in Whole Woman’s Health v. The family alleges the tech giant aided ISIS when its algorithms recommended and amplified the group's extremist videos Google denies the claim.Ī separate but related case involving Twitter asks the justices to decide whether the platform can be held liable for aiding and abetting terrorism, even if its services were not used directly in connection with a specific terrorist act.The highest Court in the most powerful nation in the world appears to have decided that it only needs to follow the law when it feels like it. In an emotional case, the family of Nohemi Gonzalez, the only American killed in the 2015 Paris terror attacks, will ask the justices to end immunity for social media companies and greenlight their lawsuit against YouTube parent company Google. The high court next month will also take up a fast-tracked challenge to President Biden’s plan to cancel federal student loan debt for up to 40 million Americans under emergency authority invoked during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Is it the state legislature alone? Can they violate the state constitution to do so? Who gets to decide that? Those are huge questions," said ABC News legal contributor and former Justice Department attorney Sarah Isgur of the election case, Moore v. And as 2024 looms, the court will rule on a major election law case over who decides when, where and how we can vote. On immigration, they'll rule on President Joe Biden's deportation plan and a dispute over Title 42, as migrants continue to flood the southern border. Spotify for podcaster8/2/2023 Apple also helped provide a central place for people to go to find podcasts. The Jobs endorsement did more than just set off interest in the space. He seems to have a look of clever naughtiness on. I like to think Jobs slid it in there on purpose. I still cannot tell if it was intentional. The live demo even included an f bomb from Adam Curry. This vote of confidence from the visionary himself said to every technologist, “this thing is real.” It was a historical moment. Steve fundamentally understood that podcasts represented the next generation of radio, because the automatic delivery of what you want gave you access to more relevant audio content. Podcasting is the next generation of radio, and users can now subscribe to over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode automatically delivered over the Internet to their computer and iPod. It’s worth reading just how praiseworthy he was of the format: Then, in 2005, podcasting got its real validation with Apple introducing the category into iTunes. This helped launch the new medium to a brand new audience, and usage kept growing. Towards the end of the year, Winer would present podcasting technology at the first-ever BloggerCon. From the earliest days, podcasts were associated with Apple.Īdam’s entry helped the medium gain validation, and many more began entering the space. He even put an iPod belew the microphone in the cover art. He decided to launch his own: the Daily Source Code, the first daily podcast. One person who noticed was MTV VJ Adam Curry. Chris was a news anchor, talk show host, and former New York Times writer. Then, in 2003, software developer Dave Winer figured out a way to send attachments to RSS feeds for his friend Christopher Lydon. But plenty of shows, like the Dan & Scott Show on AOL, gained cultural relevance. For early internet users, it was more of a pull than a push situation. He interviewed experts every week, and set out the template for millions of internet radio hosts, now called podcasters, since.įor over 10 years, users accessed asynchronous radio files by downloading them. Carl Malamud launched the first internet talk show called Internet Talk Radio. The dawn of podcasting was the early 90s. Along many steps of the way, Apple has been a driving force of its success. To fully appreciate the significance of Spotify stealing podcasts from Apple, one needs to know the history of podcasting. After all, who doesn’t want to compete in a big market like podcasts – and win? History of Podcasting Apple’s Role in the History of PodcastingĪlong the way, we’ll focus on tips for product builders and growth architects. But just how did Spotify steal podcasts from under Apple’s nose? Especially when it was so public about its intentions? Let’s find out. It is a trend that has surprised even the smartest tech analysts. By 2023, analysts expect Spotify to have 30% more MAU than Apple. Spotify just passed Apple for monthly active podcast listeners, and it is set to vastly outgrow Apple over the coming years. Just three years later, the efforts have borne fruit. In June 2018, he boldly announced the company would spend $500M to invest in growing its podcasting business. That was until Daniel Ek, the CEO of Spotify, set his eye on the podcasting market. That has made podcasts an unsung winner for Apple for many years, a future profit center that it had barely explored. This continued product development has kept the app fresh, and hard for anyone to compete against. Even relatively small iOS updates like 14.6 came with huge updates to the podcasts app. Each edition of iOS came with a set of major feature releases to the podcast app. Being an Apple app, it integrates well with Carplay and Airpods. It is naturally bundled with each iOS, and reinstalled if you remove it. Apps like Stitcher (which was acquired by SiriusXM for $325M in 2020) and Breaker exist, but the majority of users have historically gone with the podcasts app. It even has 3x speed, which, as a former policy debater and daily article writer, I use frequently.īut, for the vast majority of users in the Apple ecosystem, that has not been the case. It has wonderful design, as well as transcripts of almost every podcast I listen to. Airr is one example of a podcasting app focused on clipping highlights as written notes for later that hits a niche audience well. That is not for lack of competitors trying. Most podcast listeners started there, so they tend to stay there. Generally, throughout the history of podcasting, Apple has been the top dog.
